A specimen is not simply a picture of the mark or logo. Instead, the specimen must show the mark as it is actually used in the marketing or sale of the goods or services.

If the mark is used for services, acceptable specimens include brochures, advertising materials and Internet websites. Business cards or stationary usually do not work, unless there is some clear reference to the type of services rendered.

Acceptable specimens for goods include labels, tags, instruction manuals and containers that show the mark on the goods or packaging. Invoices, brochures, business cards and printed advertising are generally not acceptable specimens for goods.
